Is your physician a D.O?
Oct 28, 2022DOs, Doctor of Osteopathic medicine, are trained physicians and surgeons who, like MDs, may choose to specialize in any area of medicine. They use all the resources of modernn medicine to prevent, detect, and treat disease, including precribing medication and performing surgery when indicated.
In addition to medical school and hospital residency training, they also receive an education in Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT). They use OMT to diagnose and treat patients, relieve pain and discomfort, and especially prevent disease.
DOs have a patient centered and holistic approach to healthcare. They see each patient as unique and provide comprehensive treatments based on the interrelationship between Mind, Body, and Spirit. They treat the whole person, not just a disease or its symptoms.
They practice according to the principles of Dr Andrew T. Still who founded the Osteopathic School of Medicine in 1892. Through the tragic experience of losing his wife and children to devastating illnesses, he looked for ways to support the self healing abilities of the body. He saw that our bodies are capable of Self Regulation and Self Healing when brought to a perfect balance. In times where there were no laboratory tests or Xrays yet, he was able to restaure this alignement by giving particular attention to joint, bone, muscles and nerves.
Today we have more diagnostic tools, but the main principle is still the same. Healing disease starts by rebalancing all the elements in the physical, the mental, and the spiritual planes.
